Widening Participation

What is Widening Participation?
Widening Participation refers to efforts aimed at increasing access to higher education for individuals from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. This includes and is not limited to students from low-income families, ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, or those from regions with historically low levels of university enrollment. The goal is to break down barriers that prevent talented individuals from pursuing higher education, ensuring equal opportunities for all.

Why is it important?
Widening Participation is crucial because it promotes social mobility and equality of opportunity. Providing access to education for underrepresented groups, it helps break the cycle of poverty, reduces inequalities, and empowers individuals to reach their full potential by breaking down barriers. It also enhances diversity in universities, enriching the learning environment and ensuring that the benefits of education are shared more equitably across society. It allows students from all backgrounds to fulfil their aspirations!

Research

Empathos is proud to have been selected to present posters and presentations at both national and international conferences, showcasing the impactful work of our volunteers and projects. Additionally, through our research mentorship programme, we have guided mentees to achieve PubMed-indexed publications, helping to elevate their academic profiles and contribute valuable insights to the medical and healthcare fields.

Conferences

Empathos has successfully organised numerous conferences within the healthcare sector, working in collaboration with a range of student societies.

Most recently, we hosted the Diversity in General Practice Conference, where we highlighted the journeys of doctors working in Primary Care and showcased their ventures into extracurricular activities, entrepreneurship, and special interests. Among our distinguished speakers were professionals running private practices on Harley Street, dermatologists, dancers, TV presenters, and renowned medical educators, including the founders of Geeky Medics and Medibuddy. These experts shared invaluable insights into their diverse careers and personal stories, inspiring attendees with the breadth of possibilities in the medical field.

Medical Education

Empathos has conducted a variety of educational teaching sessions tailored to support university healthcare students. Our programmes include in-depth teaching on physiology, as well as preparatory courses for critical exams such as the UKMLA (Clinical Exams) and OSCEs/CPTA (Clinical Simulated Exams). These sessions are designed to enhance students' clinical skills, build their confidence, and prepare them for the rigorous demands of their medical training.
